I Want My TechTV!

June 29th, 2004 | by Jeff Fila

It was just a year ago this week that I first ordered digital cable at my house and discovered TechTV and G4. As a hardcore gamer and computer geek, having separate channels devoted to two of my passions — gaming and technology - was something great. If I could only get all of the Red Sox games while living in Yankee-land, I'd have no reason to leave the house.

Well it only took a few hours of watching G4 to realize that the channel had nothing to offer me. G4 — TV for gamers as it was called — seemed to be for a totally different kind of "gamer" than I was. I gave it several chances but I could never make it through one entire show. Players was a good idea — each episode follows celebrities or bands that game — but it seemed to be geared towards some focus group that I certainly am not a part of. The only other program that even remotely interested me was the game review show Judgment Day. Unfortunately the hosts were boring and they covered more console and MMORPG games than I cared to hear about. That got old real quick.

It seemed like every time I happened upon that channel they were showing either of those two shows or Portal a strange, unwatchable program that, as far as I can tell, is like a soap opera made from clips of different role playing games with one human "actor" as the main character. I tried to watch their gaming awards show G-phoria — the constant ads on cable drew me in - but it too was unwatchable and I changed the channel within the first 10 minutes. Nothing on G4 made sense to me and I just couldn't imagine that they had a loyal following.

But TechTV was different. It truly was a channel by techies, for techies. It had interesting shows, quality talent, and did a great job of covering technology for both the geeks and the newbies. And it had what most computer geeks dream about — hot chicks that are into gaming and computers.

TechTV's game review show X-Play put everything else on G4 to shame. It was interesting, funny, informative, and the hosts were entertaining. The shows that really made TechTV as appealing as it was to me and fellow computer enthusiasts throughout North America was The Screen Savers and Call for Help. And as much as I or other "geeks" didn't want to admit it at the time, the glue that held all of that together was Leo Laporte.

Leo Laporte during happier days on the set of The Screen SaversLeo created both shows and hosted them for over six years. He brought his unique brand of tech knowledge combined with a goofy sense of humor and a genuine interest in his viewers' questions. The hosts, regulars and guests were interesting, and for the most part highly knowledgeable, and the content was timely and informative. Leo and the gang weren't above making mistakes, and they were grilled about them in forums and discussion boards throughout the Web, but overall they were highly respected.

I spent the last 11 months watching TechTV as often as I could. The network helped me find plenty of ideas for articles, news items, or products to review for Designtechinca, but more than that, it entertained and educated me. And Leo, his Screen Savers co-host Patrick Norton, and the rest of the cast helped hundreds, perhaps thousands, of people with tech problems. Leo even spent all day on the day after Christmas doing his Call for Help-athon in which he answered as many calls as he could from people who just got new gadgets and didn't know how to use them.

Then news came that G4, owned by Comcast, was buying TechTV and the two channels would merge as one. TechTV, the network with hot tech-savvy babes, knowledgeable hosts, informative shows and a loyal following would now be under the umbrella of G4, the network with poor talent, lame graphics, and nonsensical shows. It just didn't make sense at all. Worse was news that Call for Help and Leo Laporte would be gone. Apparently Leo and Comcast couldn't work out a deal and Comcast thought he appealed to a different type of audience than what they were going for.

There were a few weeks of awkward transition when TechTV showed a bunch of repeats and Call for Help tried to stay afloat with "special guests" and Leo's former sidekicks Roger Chang and Cat Schwartz handling the hosting duties. If anyone still wasn't convinced that Leo Laporte made TechTV, weeks of watching Call for Help struggle awkwardly without him was proof enough.

And then a month ago this week it all came to an end when the merger was finalized and G4techTV went live. Not only was Call for Help gone, but so was another TechTV mainstay, the daily news show Tech Live. The Screen Savers, which had previously been rerun enough times during the day for everyone to catch, was now on only once or twice a day. Patrick Norton and much of the old gang was still there, but it had a decidedly different feel to it. And the daily G4techTV lineup was full of those G4 shows that me, and many fellow techies around North America, absolutely hated.

Those same Web forums and community boards that once goofed on Leo Laporte and the rest of TechTV's small inadequacies are now full of people wishing they could have things back the way they were. New sites have sprung up in support of the old TechTV and Leo Laporte. Countless threads on G4techTV's own message boards have been posted (and deleted) with complaints about the merger. As I post this article, there are two prominent complaint threads on the G4techTV forums, one with 248 posts and the other with 1104 posts. I've read a lot of these forums and sites and honestly, I can not find one poster who says TechTV is better now than it was before the merger.

One has to wonder if the Comcast execs actually watched G4 and knew what they were doing. Or if they actually ever watched Leo Laporte and understood what he meant to the community and what they were giving up.

Leo has handled this situation with integrity and class, as everyone expected he would. He posted updates when he could on his Website and taped a few 90-second spots for The ScreenSavers which gave the show a small sliver of its old appeal. While most of us don't know the whole story of what went down with Leo Laporte and Comcast/G4, it's obvious he was not happy with them and they were not happy with him.

Now it seems like Comcast is slowly coming to the understanding that they made a massive mistake. Leo has just announced that he will be doing a new Call for Help show on G4techTV Canada, strictly for the Canadian audience. How and why that came about I have no idea, but I'd really like to know.

Hopefully his new show will work out and make it back to the U.S. I'm sure peer-to-peer networks will be working overtime soon enough when those Canadian shows get recorded and shared for Americans longing for things the way they used to be.

Leo Laporte doesn't need G4techTV, they need him. He is a successful author, a frequent guest on Regis and Kelly, a highly in-demand speaker and a very intelligent guy and he'd be fine without them.

But the damage has already been done. I rarely watch The Screen Savers now and don't watch anything else on G4techTV. And from the forum posts I've read and discussions I've participated in, I know I'm not alone. There are many viewers out there that feel the same way: Leo Laporte was TechTV and it will never be the same again.

I agree with you, canceling screensavers was the worst mistake ever i use to be a fan of tech tv until it became all video game not for me i want to know about more of the new upcoming technology and may need help with it such as the new 64bit processors will it be good for me? cna the execs of comcast answer this question? i bet they can't but i bet leo could give us better answers that we need.things i learned and saw were great why do i want my computer to say microsoft internet explorer when i learned how to change that to whatever i wanted. ray's explorer.. bring back leo

I agree. Although my work schedule didn't allow me to watch daily, I knew that when Leo spoke, it was worth listening to. I went to watch today and behold.... not there. The stupid gaming shows are though. Not for me Coommee Baacckk Leooooo.....

I totally agree, tech tv was a grea resource of tech info and real meat on the latest stuff, with guests from the past and where are they now sort of inf that grabbed everyones interest young and old alike, and Cat was pretty nice ey candy too!

Robert on Jul 5th, 2005 at 2:22 PM:

Leo and Patrick were the show, they gave information on everything a gamer would want. Canceling the show makes absolutely no sense what so ever.I wish another net work would pick them up, or that Leo would make CD's like he did for his books. The show gave information on all the new hardware and software coming out. Without Techtv most of us wouldn't even know about Tweek UI or all those other great sites that Leo and Patrick would bring up on the show. Someone should bring the Screensavers back!

David on Jul 12th, 2005 at 9:26 AM:

Absolutely agree, G4 is fairly unwatchable.

I have tried numerous times to get into it but thier new show "Attack of the Show" is a pale comparison. Without Leo, or someone as capable, its just not even close.

I was a loyal fan of TechTV. I recently got my cable back up an running and saw that it was not G4tv. I understand that games have become a lot more complicated and people may need help playing them, but to use the entire network for that sole purpose is ridiculous. I'm also a gamer but i don't need 20 shows about games and their vixens. Give us something educational about the PC or MAC that we play these games on. Bring back the "SCREEN SAVERS" and "CALL FOR HELP". What were they thinking? It won't last long. Most of the programming makes no sense and is just a waste of television.

Tom Plahn on Jul 13th, 2005 at 4:10 PM:

Seems like Comcast has just been throwing money at their problems. I never knew anyone that actually watched their game channel. I tried watching it, but found it to be quite boring and did not feature the games I would be interested in playing. I think the problem is the concept behind G4, is flawed. It is aimed at a very narrow market, young game players. Techtv on the other hand aims at a broad audience of computer users, ranging in age and income. The answer it seems to me would be to get rid of the G4 programming, particularly that which is aimed at a narrow market, then introduce new programming geared toward the larger, computer user market. A return of fresh gear would satisfy me. I always thought it would be cool if Popular Science had a TV channel, but don't tell Comcast that they'll destroy it.

I agree 100%. The new G4 channel sucks. I went from spending 80% of my tv viewing consumed in TechTV to, literally, 00% I don't even bother flipping to it anymore to see what's on, cause i know it won't be anything that remotely interests me.

Indeed g4 isn't as good as techtv. I got out of a coma in 03 and came home and one day turned on techtv because I remembered it and I was like "what the hell!?" I don't think it sucks I just think it's for a diffrent audience. I do miss the old stuff though.

I very much agree!!! Three years ago I was able to watch and appreciate the programing on tech tv. However I went without cable for a few months, and when i came back, no offense, I love video games as much as the next "geek", but when i saw the line up for g4, I was heartbroken!!! The only show I watch as of late is x-play.. I miss Fresh Gear and Screen Savers, and yes, Call for Help!!!! One of my friends from Canada brags about how he has Call for Help in Edmonton!! *shakes my head* If g4 even thinks of removing x-play from the line up, I'll disown the channel forever..

I LOVED techTV and watched it religiously. Patrick and Leo were always well-thought humble characters who you could respect and listen to and as stated, were genuinely interested in helping people out. G4 is a terribly adolescent channel serving no help whatsoever. I still watch XPlay, as i'm an avid gamer, but the other shows are completely un-informative and the hosts are whinely unwatchable. The Screensavers was easily the best tech show ever created, keeping me informed about latest developments without haveing to do hours and hours of searching on the internet. Without it, i feel a bit lost. Jeers to Comcast, those corpo #@&$*#Q's. (Throws up the 'Laporte Forever' gangsta sign.

pete krohn on Aug 30th, 2005 at 12:07 PM:

before the first "end", leo's format was becoming a bit lame, same problem's, old hardware, no resolutions and i just lost interest watching semi informative critiques of hacked over history. comcast realized the need for some jazzing up, sexy stuff (babes and the gamers chaos), and more plain entertainment. but they indeed lost the thread that bound it all together, and that was leo's ability to knit the "fix it" story lines with the "heres the new gadgets" ideas.

we are a very demanding group, we literally require being fed new info on the newest computer and information tech stuff, but we need relief from the crazy bugs that accompany that stuff.

dont be deceived that we geeks are sexless tecno nerds. we thrive on the sexy females (and the hunks as gender requires) and the psycho-social community of rapid technology. we are a very flexible and dynamic social group, we require much "maintenance", computerwise and socialwise. we get it quick and passionately.

sorry, but the comcast execs are bottomline money fools, with little or no ear to the soul of the net.

leo has the sense to appeal to all regions of our brains, not just our fat wallets!

I am really happy to see that call for help is back on in the us.

I mis tech tv to no end, i watched it when it was ZDTV, when it was Tech TV, and even a little when it was G4TechTV.

I liked the tech tv of old the sets were tastefully done, not those teenie boper sets thay have now, and the hosts, it is a shame how a company will destroy a good (not perfect) thing like tech tv and to pedal thier garbage to more people (now seen in 53 million homes, compared to g4's original 15 million).

On May 6, 2004 G4 Media announced that they were canning the staff of tech tv, and moving everything to LA, this was the first in a series of blows that lead to the death of not just a tv station, but a style of tv unlike any other. It was at this point that i knew i was getting screwed out of a channel that was seemingly made for me.

They can at least bring back Fresh Gear (ahem Sumi das) and Screensavers (with the original cast) at least. That would make alot of people happy. Techlive would be nice too. Ok I'm probably pushing it there.

Fortunatly I live in Canada and can watch the new Call For Help, but the loss of Screensavers really ticks me off. The new Call For Help just isn't the same though, but at least it's better than nothing at all.

Lets just hope that Comcast eventually comes to their senses (sooner than later I hope) and at least brings back Screensavers and delivers Call For Help to my neighbours in the south.

I agree with you that Tech TV should be brought back. G4 has nothing to do with Technology at all. The reason I got Comcast Digital Cable in the first place was to get Tech TV. It was on the more expensive programming package but I didn't care. I downgraded my cable ever since Tech TV was gone. All of the original shows that Tech TV offered were the best. Since Tech TV left I have been really missing everything that Technology has to offer. I feel that I am less knowledgeable with all the new Tech things coming out. I don't even watch G4 anymore since everything has gotten so bad on the channel. Now I know why Kevin Rose decided to leave. G4 was trying to make Tech people into gamers. They should have just left Tech TV alone on its own channel as well as G4. The gamers are happy but what about the Tech enthusiasts? I feel bad for all the people that had to leave Tech TV. Tech TV was everyone's passion. What other network provided so many original programming and shows that were exclusive and couldn't be seen anywhere else than Tech TV. Someone has to put the Tech back in to TV again and have two separate channels. G4 for gaming. And Tech TV for Technology. I learned most things from Tech TV. Without Tech TV it is so hard to learn new things and keep up with the fast pace of Technology. Do America a favor and bring back Tech TV so everyone will have something knowledgeable to watch and entertaining.

It is the 2000's and Technology is the hottest thing out there. I want our network Tech TV back the way it was before G4 took over.

Kyle on Apr 2nd, 2006 at 8:30 PM:

Just if anyone was wondering... The reason Leo is on in Canada only is because Comcast only owns about 20% of G4TechTV up north and Rogers cable owns more than 50%. Call for Help was one of the most watched show up in Canada so right after it was cancelled in the U.S. Rogers called up Leo and said they wanted to resurect the show, and of cource Leo agreed. I love it because i'm sure it really stuck it to Comcast.

I miss TechTV just like everybody else here, I watched it sense the begining in 1998. I hope Call For Help comes on in America.

Being a gamer/computer techie i had little time for tv, but i MADE time for zdtv/techtv. Informative and entertaining "screen savers" and "call for help" rocked.
