Google Offers Suggest In Search

August 27, 2008 | by Christopher Nickson

Google is offering Suggest, an auto-suggest feature that works on what's already been typed, on its search homepage.

Go to Google’s homepage and you’re going to see something new from Google Labs.

Google Suggest is a new feature in search, although the company has already employed it in many other areas.

It’s designed to make queries more efficient and accurate by offering suggestions based on what a user has already typed, offering recommendations from the most popular search options for the term.

According to a blog from Google product manager Jennifer Liu, the feature can reduce spelling errors and help formulate queries. She wrote:

“The Google Suggest feature originally started as a 20% project in 2004, and has since expanded to Google Labs, Toolbar, Firefox search box, Maps and Web Search for select countries, the iPhone and BlackBerry, YouTube, and now Google.com.”
