Webby Award Winners Announced

The Web has celebrated its own equivalent to the Oscars with the 12th annual Webby Awards, and the winners include the New York Times, the Onion, and the BBC.

As the organizers of the Webby Awards announce on their site, “Webby Honorees, Nominees and Winners truly represent the best of the Web. They are but a small percentage of total entries and have been chosen by members of the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences based on a number of creative and functional criteria.” And now we know who the chosen ones are, after the winners of the 12^th annual Webby Awards were announced.

Many of the names picked by the Academy are familiar, such as Flickr, which won a pair of awards for Best Practices and also for Community. The New York Times site was named best for news and also newspaper, the site for the Simpsons movie won for Best Movie, while the Onion took home the humor award. The largely unknown Ted.com carried home three awards, while the BBC also did well, including Best Radio site for the World Service.

National Geographic Online was named Best Magazine website, with Nature top for science, and Flock beat out the competition for Social Networking site. Unusually for awards, each category has two winners, once selected by judges, the other by the voting public.
