Wikia Search Arrives Monday

January 03, 2008 | by Christopher Nickson

After knowledge, Wiki goes a' searching.

As of Monday there will be a new search engine on the block – at least in its preliminary form. Wikia Search, the first community-driven search engine, will appear in alpha form, according to a story or ZDNet.

What will make Wikia Search different will be allowing users to contribute to pages rankings as well as edit search results. The search algorithms and APIs will be open-source. As part of its search engine, Wikia will use the Grub search project, which takes a different approach by using processing power donated by users to search. It was acquired by Wiki last year.

Wikipedia co-found Jimmy Wales hopes that in time Wikia Search might rival Google, but with more transparency in its results
