UK TV Networks To Go VoD
November 28, 2007 | by Christopher Nickson
The networks will come together for a combined video on demand service next year.
Are you a fan of British television? Not just the big dramas, but also comedies like Father Ted and Blackadder or crime shows like Cracker? If so, there’s some very good news on the horizon.
The main British networks – BBC, ITV and Channel 4 – have agreed to work together to provide a joint on-demand video service that will comprise both current and classic shows, making literally thousands of hours of television available. It’s expected to launch next year.
Currently, each service has its own online on-demand service. Those of the BBC and ITV will continue, but Channel 4’s 4oD will fold into the larger service. The BBC only recently launched its iPlayer service.
"The new service will contain some of the very best of the UK's content for consumers to view in one place, which will be both easy to use and great fun," John Smith, chief executive of BBC Worldwide, told the BBC.
Some programming will be available for downloads, while others shows will be stream, or can be rented or purchased.
Grand as it sounds, though, the service has yet to be approved by the boards of the different broadcasters – although there seems to be little doubt that it will sail through – and be named.
