The new EOS 30D Digital SLR sports an 8.2-megapixel CMOS sensor and a five fps shoot capability, among other features.

Canon yesterday unveiled a new digital SLR. The new EOS 30D Digital SLR will be available in April in body form only for $1,399, as well as kit form with the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 II zoom lens for $1,499.

The EOS 30D, said Canon, is targeted towards the mid-range of the DSLR market. This model combines Canon's DIGIC II Imaging processor with an 8.2-megapixel APS-C size CMOS sensor. The features of the EOS 30D include five fps shoot capability, a shutter rated up to 100,000 cycles, a 2.5" LCD, a spot metering function with covers approximately 3.5 percent of the viewfinder area, a burst rate of 30 consecutive frames in JPEG L/F mode and 11 consecutive frames in RAW mode, an initial startup time of 0.15 seconds, a single shot AE/AF lock, a 9-point Wide-Area AF system and direct print and direct download functions.

"Canon focused the EOS 30D Digital SLR on professional photographers who need to keep a close watch on their equipment budget and advanced amateurs who want to step up in class and capabilities," said Yukiaki Hashimoto, senior vice president and general manager of the consumer imaging group at Canon U.S.A., Inc, in a statement. "As an accessible primary pro SLR or the affordable second body in the camera bag, the EOS 30D digital SLR provides photo professionals with the advanced features, fast, responsive controls, and exceptional image quality they demand, in a compact, lightweight yet ruggedly constructed stainless steal and magnesium alloy package."

Sort of a non-event upgrade for existing users. As one of hte first buyers of the 5D I was a bit worried what they might come up with. It will be nice for new buyers to have the bigger LCD but I don't see anything that is worth an upgrade from the 20D. MY 5D has been treating me very well for photography around Steamboat Springs for fun and real estate photos.
